Fixing Tooth Sensitivity with a Little Help from Infrared
Dealing with sensitive teeth usually comes down to one problem: those tiny open tunnels in the dentin. Most of the gels or pastes we use just sit on the surface. They don’t really get deep enough to plug the leak, which is why the sensitivity keeps coming back. We found a better way. We use infrared (IR) light to basically “push” the medicine deeper into the tooth. How it actually works Think of it like this: when we hit the tooth with infrared waves, it creates a bit of localized heat. That heat thins out the desensitizing medication—making it less thick and more fluid. Because it’s thinner, the medicine slides way deeper into those tunnels than it ever would if it were cold. It’s a simple trick of physics, but it means the seal is much tighter and lasts longer. The “Sweet Spot” for Heat Now, you can’t just blast the tooth with heat. If you go overboard, you’ll kill the pulp, and nobody wants that. That’s why we stick to the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. It’s a specific wavelength that targets the water in the tooth just enough to get the medicine moving, but keeps everything at a safe temperature. You just have to keep an eye on your power settings to make sure the heat stays controlled. The Real-World Stuff The best part? It’s fast. Your patients get out of the chair sooner, and you get your day back. There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though. The gear takes up a bit of extra space on your counter. Also, every tooth is different. If you’re dealing with really dense enamel, you might need to leave the light on a few seconds longer than you would for more porous dentin. My advice? Hook it up to a precision timer. It takes the guesswork out of it so you never have to worry about over-exposing the tooth.
