Using Infrared to Calm Down Gum Inflammation
When we’re dealing with periodontitis, we use specific infrared (IR) wavelengths to get a handle on the inflammation in the gums. Now, this isn’t just about warming up the surface of the skin. We’re actually sending energy deep into the tissue to change how the gums react to the infection.
Getting the Inflammation Under Control
Here is how it works. The infrared light sinks through the gum tissue and reaches those deeper periodontal ligaments. Inside there, we’re hunting for specific proteins—TNF-α and IL-1β—that basically act as the “fuel” for swelling and tissue damage. Making it Work in the Clinic
But here’s the thing: IR isn’t a magic wand. You can’t just use it on its own. It works best as a partner to scaling and root planing (SRP). First, we clear out the bacterial biofilm. Then, we bring in the IR therapy to help the swelling go down faster. The gentle heat gets the blood moving, which flushes out the junk and brings in fresh oxygen. If you apply it right after the cleaning, you’ll notice the gums calm down much quicker.
The Tricky Part
Of course, it’s a bit of a balancing act. You have to be careful with the dose. If you crank the intensity too high, you risk burning the sensitive lining of the mouth. The goal is to get the energy all the way down to the alveolar bone without scorching the surface. That’s why you need gear that lets you control the timing and distance exactly. It takes a calibrated emitter and a steady hand to get it just right.
