Getting Your Industrial Curing Right with Custom Gallium Iodide Lamps
Standard mercury lamps are great until they aren’t. If you’re working with thick films or coatings with a lot of pigment, you’ve probably noticed they just don’t bite deep enough. That’s where gallium iodide comes in. We build these lamps to hit that sweet spot between 300nm and 400nm. It’s all about targeting the photoinitiators that regular lamps simply miss.
The science of the “tacky” surface
Ever pull a part out of the curing oven only to find the surface is still sticky? Or worse, the top looks fine, but the bottom layer is basically wet paint? That’s usually a spectral mismatch. The light isn’t penetrating the resin. By mixing gallium iodide into the discharge, we widen the UV-A and UV-B output. This lets the light punch through opaque or heavily filled resins. It actually reaches the bottom. No more guessing if it’s cured—it just is.
Dealing with the heat
Here is the catch: more power means more heat. When we crank up the wattage to get you more photons, those tubes get hot. Really hot. You’ve got to make sure your cooling fans or water jackets are actually doing their job. If the tube overheats, you get “solarization.” That’s when the quartz starts to cloud over, and your UV output just dies. We use high-purity quartz to push the limits, but at the end of the day, the lamp is only as good as your cooling setup. Keep it cool, and it’ll last.
Swapping them out
You don’t need to rip out your entire line to make this work. We design these to be drop-in replacements. Whether you need a weird length or specific end-caps, we match the footprint of the gear you already have. You just wire it into your current ballast and you’re good to go. One quick tip: check your voltage stability. Big spikes will fry your electrodes way faster than they should. We’re not interested in fancy branding or overpriced boxes.
