Getting Your PCB Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’re working with HDI boards, you know the struggle of getting adhesives and photoresists to actually set. Standard mercury lamps are fine for some things, but they’re a bit like using a shotgun when you need a sniper rifle. That’s where gallium iodide comes in. These lamps hit the exact UV bands your resins actually want to absorb. The trick with heat and depth One of the biggest headaches in a fab is the “skin effect”—where the top of your solder mask looks cured, but the bottom is still gooey. We built these lamps to punch through. Because they hit the UV-A and UV-B ranges so hard, the energy reaches all the way to the bottom of the layer. But here’s the catch: these things put out a lot of energy, which means heat. If your conveyor is crawling, you’re going to warp your boards. It’s a balancing act. You have to dial in your lamp wattage against your line speed so you don’t stress the fiberglass epoxy. Get it right, and it’s smooth sailing. Get it wrong, and you’ve got a pile of scrap. Fitting them into your line We use a high-transmittance quartz envelope so you get every bit of that UV light. Plus, we reinforced the end-caps. Factory floors are noisy and vibrate constantly; we didn’t want your lamps cracking or leaking just because a nearby machine is humming. Most of the time, these are just drop-in replacements for your current UV arrays. Just a heads-up on the wiring: make sure your ballast impedance matches perfectly. If you try to run these on a ballast meant for a different gas mix, you’ll burn out your electrodes way faster than you should. What this actually does for your floor In the real world, this means your UV inks and solder masks bond to the copper traces properly. You won’t have to worry about those annoying uncured residues causing shorts during etching. And because they work faster, you can actually shorten your curing tunnels. That frees up some much-needed floor space. One last thing—don’t forget your ventilation. These lamps create ozone, so just make sure your exhaust system is humming along to keep the air clean.
